Fistral beach is one of the most iconic beaches in the UK and has a reputation as one of the best beach breaks in the UK. It therefore carries the name for being the UK home for surfing with its long stretches of golden sands ,encased in beautiful rocks and cliffs.
Fistral beach is a West-facing beach which is exposed to Atlantic swells guaranteeing waves all year round. This means that it can host numerous amounts of local and international competitions. Newquay is also home to a reef known as the Cribbar. Here waves can be seen breaking at up to 20 feet (6 m)!! The Cribbar requires no wind AND huge swell to break so therefore is rarely surfed, but when the conditions are right it can be huge.
Boardmasters is one of the most famous events being held at Fistral which is actually a stop along the WSL tour for Men and Woman’s longboard – check out our review of the Boardmasters surf and music festival here … Boardmasters 2016. Even surfing great KELLY SLATER competed in the Boardmasters competition before he went on to become one of the greatest surfers of all time and 11x world champion.
Fistral is the perfect family beach offering excellent sea and surf combined with its wonderful facilities and inviting locals. The great thing about Fistral beach is you can park all day in the car park located on the beach for a reasonable price making it an excellent family beach and young children friendly!!
It also has plenty of surf hire shops in the town or even on the beach which means that it is suitable for absolute beginners as well as more advanced surfers. There are plenty of local surf schools around Fistral beach for first time surfers or for people who want to polish up on the skills they have already got. Showers and toilet facilities are also available and plenty of cafes and restaurants such as Rick Stein fish and chips for that after surf refresh.
